Towel GSM from 350 to 700: Why Hotel Quality Towels Are 550 GSM

Understanding GSM in one minute

GSM expresses the mass of terry per square metre of fabric. The higher it is, the denser and taller the water-absorbing loops: the towel is more absorbent, softer, heavier — and slower to dry. GSM is to bath linen what thread count is to sheets: the central indicator, to be crossed with fibre quality (a 550 g towel in long-staple combed cotton outclasses a 600 g one in coarse carded yarn).

A concrete order of magnitude: a 70×140 towel weighs ~390 g at 400 g/m², ~540 g at 550 g/m², ~690 g at 700 g/m². Weigh your current towels on a kitchen scale: it is the simplest — and the hardest to fake — way to check what a label actually claims.

The GSM table and what each weight is for

Why hotels converge on 500-600 g/m²: below that, guests perceive a towel “that scrubs” (thin, harsh after a few cycles); above it, drying becomes the enemy — a 700 g towel still damp at the core develops that musty smell, and the tumble dryer bills it in kilowatt-hours. 550 is the point where perceived luxury and operations make peace.

500 or 600 GSM: decide by your situation

• Urban Airbnb rental → 550 g/m², white: hotel feel to the touch, drying compatible with a 48 h turnover — the standard allocation is on the Airbnb linen page;
• Riad / guesthouse with pool or hammam → 550 g in the bathrooms + dedicated pool pieces; consumption triples, and so does stock (details here);
• Hotel with industrial laundry → 500-550 g: every gram is paid for in water, energy and dryer time, multiplied by hundreds of pieces a day;
• Home, family bathroom → entirely as you please: 550 g is durable and reasonable for daily rotation, 600 g if you love real thickness and own a tumble dryer to keep up with it;
• Humid areas (Essaouira, the northern coast) → do not go up in GSM: sea air already stretches drying times, and a 600 g towel becomes unmanageable there.

What GSM does not tell you: the 4 other criteria

• The fibre: combed cotton (long fibres, minimal pilling) beats carded cotton. Long-fibre loops still stand upright after 100 washes;
• Loop hold: pull gently on a loop — if it runs, the towel will run in the machine;
• The dobby border: the flat woven band near each end stabilises the towel; its neatness is a marker of serious making;
• The finishes: double hems, tightly stitched — that is where entry-level towels go to die.

Making your towels last (whatever the GSM)

• Wash before first use: the first water bath opens the loops, rinses off the finishing agents and sets the absorbency for good;
• 60°C max for everyday use, moderate spin (1,000 rpm): terry hates violent spinning;
• Ban routine fabric softener: it coats the fibres with a film that kills absorbency — prefer half a glass of white vinegar in the rinse, once a month;
• Dry to the core before folding: a towel stored while still damp picks up a smell — and keeps it permanently;
• Whiten with active oxygen, not bleach, which yellows and burns cotton (full protocol).
