In 2025 Essaouira crossed the symbolic million-night mark — a record for a town this size, driven by its intra-muros riads and its kitesurf scene. But every Souiri host knows the local enemy: the trade wind loads the air with moisture and salt, linen dries slowly, and a sheet put away slightly damp in a medina house smells musty within two days.
Ocean humidity changes the whole linen cycle: a sheet that dries in 3 hours in Marrakech can need 24 in Essaouira off-season. That is the technical case for 50/50 polycotton (it dries roughly twice as fast as pure cotton) and for the 3-sets-per-bed rule: the reserve set is not a comfort, it is what saves you on the days the sea mist never lifts.
Storage takes method too in medina houses: put linen away perfectly dry, in a closed wardrobe with a moisture absorber, never against an outside wall. A well-stored white stays white; a white stored damp yellows in patches (our whitening guide covers the rescue).
Essaouira sits 190 km from our workshop: after Marrakech, it is the fastest city for us to restock — count 48 h in practice. The kitesurfers of Sidi Kaouki and Moulay Bouzerktoun also go through a lot of towels: 550 GSM terry dries more slowly than microfibre but, unlike it, survives daily washing.

Yellowing comes mostly from damp storage and chlorine. Dry completely before folding, store in a closed wardrobe away from outside walls, and whiten with percarbonate rather than bleach. Polycotton helps: it reaches bone-dry twice as fast as cotton.
